WFH Makeover Ideas

I have been redecorating my little loft for a little over a month now, but with me stuck working from home all the time I decided that I wanted to keep sprucing things up. Although, I haven’t made anymore changes yet I decided that instead of doing a “vision board” with ideas of things I want to add or change that I would write a post about it!

Let us first start with the changes I have already made to my loft. First, I have moved my couch from being the “room divider” to being against the front wall under my new DIY medal rack (more on this later). My uncle and aunt helped bring over an armoire my grandmother had in her room before she passed that I am now using against the side cement wall as an additional storage space. When I originally moved back, I started to utilize the front closet where the water heater for the house is stores as a makeshift closet. Since then, I’ve added about 6 plastic containers with drawers that I store my workout clothes, extra t-shirts, my shorts, bathing suits, and so forth. With those changes, I was able to move the bookshelf that was up against an awkward wall into the room which now serves as the room divider covering the backside of my TV table (essentially hiding my cables).

In the room portion of the loft, I added some new shelves from TJ Maxx where I had a some drawers that were not only used and abused but they stuck out like a sore thumb (they were black and neon turquoise – not exactly chic). These shelves have actually become a make shift sit/stand desk, but more on this later. Additionally, we brought my grandmother’s old jewelry piece into my room and I moved all the random jewelry I had in the acrylic boxes into this stand and I put the acrylic necklace holders on the top part of it.

All these changes really opened up my room making the loft look exceedingly big (which is always a good thing). I do need to mention my coffee table is still in the living room portion, and it no longer holds crap that I don’t know where to put which has given me the opportunity to showcase my favorite candles, pictures, and coffee table books!

However, with my current work from home situation I feel like there’s room to continue to improve. As I mentioned, I turned my about a month old shelving unit from TJ Maxx into a sit/stand desk situation. I did this by ordering a laptop stand from Amazon that allows me to prop my laptop up and moving the piggy bank and storage basket down a few shelves. I took one of the plastic containers I bought at target to organize my nightstand drawer and moved the coffee table books I originally had on the top shelf into. So the top shelf and the second shelf can be used for the laptop stand (hence the sit/stand). I moved my Chevron chair from the living room over into my room, and placed it in front of the shelving unit so I could sit on it when I felt tired of standing. When i’m sitting, the storage basket with my remotes is on the top shelf and when I’m standing it’s on the second shelf.

Here is what this all looks like:

“Living Room portion of my Loft”
“Front view of Living Room, showing Bookshelf as divider”
“Bedroom portion of Loft”

‘Side view of Bedroom”
“Original look of the TJ Maxx shelves”
“TJ Maxx shelves transformed into my Work Space”

While all of this works for me, as I mentioned before, the creative bug has definitely bitten me and I want to keep doing more changes. I promise you my credit cards are going to hate me after this quarantine is over, but whatever keeps me sane – right?

So here is what I’m thinking of adding to the space

  1. Every time I go to Target (of course this was before the stay at home order and social distancing) I go straight to the Home section. I have been eyeing a few throw pillows from Target’s Opal House brand for my couch that would go great with this beautiful Miami pillow my friends bought me a few years ago: Round Crochet Throw Pillow – Opalhouseβ„’ and Square Embroidered Border Throw Pillow Saffron – Opalhouseβ„’
  2. I also really love this white lamp: Ceramic Ringed Accent Lamp White – Opalhouseβ„’ – it truly is just so timeless!
  3. I have been eyeing this beautiful portrait for months but I can’t seem to get it when it becomes available online (it has come back in stock 3 times and I still can’t get it before it sells out!) Woman Figural Wall Canvas White – Opalhouseβ„’. I’d really like it for my bathroom, on the new shelves I just built…I guess I’ll have to keep trying to snag it!

When I was reorganizing, I gutted everything in my TV stand so my shelves are actually pretty scarce. I bought some plastic containers to help keep things organized and in order, but they’re still empty so I’ve been thinking of using the space to store my materials like pens, pencils, markers, notebooks, scissors, etc. I also threw out the paper organizer I had so I’m starting to put folders and important papers in the plastic magazine organizer I bought.

Are there any specific things you need to have in your “home office”? I’ve been thinking of adding a white board & acrylic calendar to one of the walls to help keep me in order, but I haven’t decided if I should. What do you think?
