New Music Monday

Previously I have done a “New Music Friday” post, since new music tends to drop on Friday mornings…but I wanted to switch it up a bit. On Friday’s, the first thing I do when I wake up is listen to different singles or albums have dropped. My aunt makes fun of me and calls me DJ KJ because I will typically wake her up blasting music from my room on Friday mornings. For the sake of this post, though, I don’t want to highlight my playlist but rather the songs which were added, that I actually listened to repeatedly since Friday morning.

First of these songs is by Jaden Smith (stage name Jaden), Rainbow Bap. I really love Jaden as an artist. He has an entirely unique style, both in Fashion and his music. You would think, with a father like his, that he would be a rapper – but he’s not exactly that. His unique sound brings me back to his albums/EP each time he drops a new one.

Next up is Miley Cyrus. Of course. If you know me, you know I love me some Miley. I find this new song, Midnight Sky, to be very different from what she’s put out in the last few years. Having gone through a divorce with her first love and partner of over 10 years, then finding herself in a new relationship (which she also just recently ended), becoming sober again, and trying to find herself this new sound works for her. It’s easily relatable for anyone who is trying to find their new path, regardless of what you’ve gone through to get there. It’s about ownership and finding yourself, she sings about not needing someone else to love yourself.

Another artist, whom I’ve mentioned I am a fan of before, that I love is Dua Lipa. Her album came out a month or two ago, but there have been some new airplay of two songs in particular that I love: Hallucinate and Levitating. Levitating, particularly, has been remixed and it’s just such a mood lifter that I love listening to it. She reminds me of a young Gaga, with the disco dance beats.

It was during the first One World concert organized to benefit the World Health Organization and their fight against COVID that I discovered Burna Boy; since then, I’ve fallen in love with numerous songs by him…most recently though is Monsters You Made featuring Chris Martin. It’s just such a fun, calming sound, with an all around good beat.

I will be brutally honest, but I truly don’t like Country. Having said that though, there are a few artists whom I am a fan of. Not necessarily their “Country” sound, but the collaborations they’ve done with others. Dan + Shay, Florida Georgia Line, Tim McGraw, and most recently – Kane Brown. I currently have three songs by Kane Brown on my playlist that are heavily rotated: Be Like That, Worship You, and Cool Again. Two of these are collaborations; Be Like That with Khalid (and a handful of other collaborators) and Cool Again with Nelly.

I am a fan of Charlie Puth, and I was so happy when he started dropping new music during this pandemic. I was getting bored with some of the songs people were dropping; it was just heavily focusing on R&B and Rap. I wanted some new, fresh, Pop sounds. He dropped Girlfriend first, and last week he dropped Hard on Yourself with blackbear.

Although, not typically a fan of Taylor Swift nor Selena Gomez, I give credit when credit is due and two of their most recent songs are on repeat in my playlist: Cardigan by Taylor and Past Life, which is a collaboration between Selena and Trevor Daniel.

And finally, to wrap up the new music, is Jason Derulo. Also previously mentioned, I love Jason. I have seen him in concert a handful of times and it’s always fun and fresh. It’s that same fresh and fun style that has attracted me to the three new songs he has put out. First, is Savage Love which was made famous before he actually dropped the song because of TikTok. It’s one of the TikTok challenges that everyone is into. He other two songs are Don’t Cry For Me, with Akon and Martin Jensen, and Take You Dancing (which literally makes me dance every time I hear it – even in the shower). Along with Savage Love, that is huge on TikTok, he also remixed another song made famous ala TikTok, like CoΓ±o.
