The Shipped Trip by NC Barton — The Ultimate Feel-Good Summer Romance

First of all, thank you so much to @beyondthebookspr and @ncbartonwrites for sending me an eARC of The Shipped Trip! As someone who still considers herself a baby romance reader, this honestly felt like the perfect book to get lost in.

And now that I’ve finished it? I completely understand why people love NC Barton’s books so much.

A Romance That Feels Like Summer

The Shipped Trip is the kind of romance that makes you want to book a vacation immediately after finishing the last chapter. Set aboard a Caribbean cruise, the story combines sunshine, emotional healing, forced proximity, fake dating chaos, and years of unresolved feelings into one incredibly addictive read.

Even though I’m personally not a huge cruise person, NC Barton somehow made the setting feel magical. The atmosphere was warm, lively, and immersive in a way that made me feel like I was traveling right alongside the characters. Every part of the cruise added something to the story instead of simply acting as a backdrop.

And honestly? If real cruises were like this one, I’d probably already be packing a suitcase.

The Characters Were the Heart of the Story

What really made this book work for me was the emotional depth behind all the fun romance tropes.

Ruby/Chloe immediately stood out to me because of her history as a dancer whose career ended after a serious injury. As an ex-dancer myself, her storyline hit hard in ways I wasn’t expecting. The grief that comes with losing something that once defined your entire future was written so carefully and realistically. It wasn’t overdramatic or exaggerated — it showed up quietly in the way she moved through life, the uncertainty she carried, and the struggle of trying to rediscover herself afterward.

Watching her slowly begin to heal emotionally throughout the story was genuinely beautiful.

Then there’s Holden.

Listen. I loved this man.

At first he gives off chaotic golden retriever energy — flirty, playful, charming — but underneath that he’s incredibly calm, dependable, and thoughtful. He’s the kind of character who quietly takes care of everyone around him without needing praise for it. The way he supports Chloe while also balancing loyalty to his best friend and family made him feel so emotionally mature.

Also, a man who can dance AND appreciate art without turning it into a personality competition? Immediate book boyfriend material.

The Chemistry Was EVERYTHING

One of my favorite things about this book was the tension between Holden and Chloe. Since they both secretly have feelings for each other, every fake-dating moment becomes ten times better because the reader already knows what they refuse to admit.

And the trope execution here was genuinely so good.

Brother’s best friend? Perfect.
Forced proximity? Incredible.
One bed? Exactly what I wanted.
Fake dating on a couple’s cruise? Elite decision-making.

What I appreciated most was how naturally everything developed. Their relationship never felt rushed even though the setting creates this whirlwind romance atmosphere. Every interaction added more emotional weight, more longing, and more comfort between them.

They weren’t just attracted to each other — they genuinely balanced each other out in the best ways.

The Writing Balanced Everything Perfectly

One thing NC Barton does incredibly well is balancing tone. The book is funny and warm without losing the emotional depth underneath it. The spice feels natural, the emotional moments land properly, and the pacing keeps everything moving without becoming overwhelming.

It’s honestly the definition of a comfort romance.

This is the kind of book you read curled up with iced coffee during summer and immediately recommend to everyone afterward.

Can You Read It as a Standalone?

Absolutely.

This was actually my first Fortune Falls book, and I never felt lost while reading. The world and relationships were easy to settle into, but by the end I was completely invested in the series and already planning to read the previous books.

That’s probably one of the best compliments I can give a romance series.

Final Thoughts

The Shipped Trip ended up being so much more emotional, comforting, and satisfying than I expected. It’s romantic escapism with heart — full of healing, tension, chemistry, and characters that genuinely care about each other.

If you’re looking for the perfect summer romance, this one absolutely deserves a spot on your TBR.
