What I’m Packing for a Weekend in New York City
My older sister and I spent Thanksgiving morning planning what we are going to do in New York and as soon as I got home, before Thanksgiving dinner, I spent the afternoon taking out what I am considering for the trip. My work chair, which I will need to use, has the pile of jeans, sweaters, and the puffer jacket and then my couch has the undergarments (thermals, turtlenecks, leggings, etc.); my plan is to start putting together the outfits so I can take polaroids and put away the stuff I won’t be taking.
In order to start picking outfits, I had to list out what the tentative itinerary is looking like. Here’s what I remember from what we discussed on Thanksgiving.
- Friday:
- Flight from MIA to NYC
- Car ride into city from Airport
- Check into Hotel
- Grab a drink at Grand Central Station
- Hudson Yards
- Saturday
- Chinatown/Little Italy/Soho/The Village
- Lombardi’s for lunch
- Oculus
- Back to Hotel
- Dinner
- Sunday
- Breakfast
- Train to Brooklyn
- Dior Exhibit
- Lunch
- Train back to City
- Hotel
- Rockefeller/Midtown
- Moulin Rouge on Broadway
- Dinner after show
- Monday
- Breakfast
- Light shopping
- Flight from NYC to MIA
Now that I have mapped out what (I think) we’re doing, I can start planning out what I need to take on the trip:
- Outerwear
- Undergarments
- Intimates
- Thermals
- Turtlenecks
- Leggings
- Socks
- Sweaters
- Pants
- Shoes
- Accessories
- Gloves
- Sunglasses
- Scarves
- Hats
- Purses
With that, I can actually start piecing together what outfits I’d wear and what items from the piles I would take. Here are some of the options I’ve put aside for consideration:
- Outerwear – I actually bought a puffer jacket from Old Navy that I have fallen in love with. It’s gender-neutral, water resistant, and SO FREAKING SOFT. Here is the selfie I blasted my sisters and best friends when I tried it on (please excuse my crocs, I was very comfortable)
- Undergarments – for my undergarments, I’m recycling a lot that I bought for Utah earlier this year. My thermals are from Uniqlo, and I absolutely love them. I used to wear them when I lived in Orlando and had to go to work during 35 degree cold fronts. I also have some turtlenecks from J. Crew that I’ll be taking, those are my favorite because of how thin and soft they are, you can layer them very easily.
- Sweaters – some of the sweaters I’m considering taking are from J. Crew, SheIn, Loft, Target, and one from that local boutique in Miami, Aria Rose…
- Pants – I’ve decided I’m going to take the Curvy High Rise Skinny Jeans In Light Grey Wash and the Curvy 90s Straight Jeans In Washed Black Wash from my Black Friday purchases, and I’ll probably take one more pair but in a blue wash for during the day. Simple, easy, and effortless.
- Shoes – For the shoes, I’ll be keeping it simple. My Circus by Sam Edelman Women’s Darielle Lug Sole Chelsea Boots and my Hunter rain-boots in case it snows. Given my ankle is still recovering, I have to wear shoes that will fit the brace and are comfortable. I will also take one of my black boots, most likely the Steve Madden combat boots from my last trip to NY, just so I have an option to dress up my look for the Broadway show.
- Accessories – this is definitely the one section that has the most versatility. I will be packing a few scarves, some of my favorites are from Zara (they have these big, deliciously warm, blanket scarves), a pair of gloves that let me text (mine are from Amazon), I also bought the coziest wool socks (also from Amazon). As for my sunnies, I’ll probably take either my Etnia or my Celine, or even my oversized classic aviators from Rayban (maybe I’ll take all three, who knows!). Lastly, for a bag I have two planned out: Henri Bendel Jetsetter Convertible Backpack (I have a large denim one that’s great for traveling, and since it converts from a backpack to a crossbody it’s ideal for NYC) and the other is my Prada Re-Edition 2005 Re-Nylon bag, which is ideal for nights out on the town.
Honestly, I also plan to continue shopping when I get there so I want to keep things simple while packing. My secret trick is packing everything in my Away carry-on and then adding the Longchamp duffle bag inside in case whatever I buy won’t fit on the way home (😬).
