Things Keeping Me Sane While Stuck Working From Home
I refuse to sit here and lie to you, so I won’t be doing that. Being home, in social isolation, is extremely difficult for me. I am not the “out on the town” type of girl that both of my sisters are. I also am not the type of girl who sits at home all weekend and does nothing. Although I most definitely prefer hanging out at home or at my friends houses to going out to bars and clubs, I do like to have the freedom to do even the simplest of things OUTSIDE my house.
My weekends typically consist of going to the mall, running errands, getting hair and nails done, going to my parents for family night, etc. I’ll even do what we used to call “loser laps” growing up, that’s when we would go to the outdoor mall and walk around in circles with friends until our parents came to pick us up at curfew. Except instead of it being with a group of friends, at the outdoor mall, I do it at malls by my house or my parents house and I’ll window shop in the process. Most of the time I’ll get something I needed (or convinced myself I needed) but the rest of the time, I just walk in circles.
So while we are under social house arrest, these are the few things I have found to keep me sane. Let’s start with the easy ones:
- Watching reruns of my favorite shows: Law & Order, Criminal Minds, and yes, even Friends
- Online “Window” Shopping has been a new favorite activity, I’ll probably do a bigger blog post about this sometime this week. Basically, I’ll go to websites I love to shop at and fill up my basket like I was going to check out but instead I abandon ships – not purchasing anything at all. I’ve done this a few times, and I actually have a few friends who have told me they’re doing it too!
- A new found hobby of mine, to my aunts amusement, has been to organize my “loft” or room. Typically, I am the #1 lazy girl and will let my room get extremely cluttered and disorganized. Not because I am a messy person, but 100% because I am L-A-Z-Y. Since I’m home all day, and I typically have anxiety while I work I’ll start to put things away or move things around, I’ve even become obsessed with organizing my papers and files. Maybe I’ll do a post about what I have organized while I’ve been home.
- Pinterest and Blogging have also been extremely helpful with my curious mind. I’ll be looking up ideas for new looks I want to try, or new accessories I want to buy, even some quotes to use for inspiration all day long. When I’m bored of Pinterest (I’m not sure how that is even possible), I start to write things down that I want to write about. I’ve come up with about three pages worth of posts and two more pages just of topics I can write about. It seems to be the most effective way to organize my thoughts!
- Another thing that is keeping me sane would be my family and friends and our group chats. I spend all day long texting my sisters in our group chat, and then I have an ongoing WhatsApp chat with my best friends. This doesn’t include the single texts I send my other friends or family members. Since my cousin has moved in, we also have a group chat for us at the house. When I’m locked in my room all day working, they’ll send me fun articles or tidbits to keep me entertained!
- MEMES. I can’t even tell you how much I love memes. They are just so freaking fun, and I spend 85% of my day sending my manager memes on Instagram if I haven’t already reposted them.
- Reading magazines has become a new old favorite of mine. I used to love buying magazines and cutting them up, making vision boards with them but as technology advanced and magazines became more accessible online I stopped buying them. I have gotten a few in the mail since I’ve moved home and it’s reminded me how much I love to have the physical magazine (just like I prefer a physical book to an e-book). When I went on Saturday to pick up my mail at the Post Office I was pleasantly surprised to see an Oprah magazine in there too!
- I haven’t really sat down and read the book I’ve been reading while home, but I will be doing that more before bed. I have been having issues sleeping lately and to avoid not being able to sleep, I want to turn the TV off around 10 and read a bit before bed. I am seriously behind on my reading goal, so I need to really buckle down and catch up. Work is also going to be slowing down a bit while we are in self-isolation so I’ll be able to read on my breaks.
- Another favorite of mine has been Apple Music. I absolutely love listening to music, there’s just something so fun about hearing music – instead mood lifter. To be honest, I have Apple Music and Spotify but I’m 100% more of an Apple girl so I stick to that. I have a bunch of playlists that are public, maybe one day I’ll post some links to them. In the meantime, I’ll keep making them and dancing around my room to them!
- Usually taking a long walk or working out makes me feel good, but since it’s so hot now in Miami I try to avoid going outside which is no bueno. Unless I’m up at the ass crack of dawn, I definitely do not want to be outside walking so I’ve resorted to recreating some workouts my trainer taught me inside my room! I’ll definitely be sharing more about those soon. I recently bought resistance bands, but I’m trying to focus on things we can do without any tools/equipment since every where I look is out of weights and workout essentials! I most definitely am not the yoga type either. Stay tuned!
I’ll probably update this list a few times while we remain on social lockdown since I’ll be finding more ways to keep myself sane so keep checking back to see if there’s something new!
