The Tide Don’t Break & The Rising Tide Rests – A Love Letter to Stories That Stay With You

There’s something really special about finding a book (or in this case, a series) that you don’t just read… you sit with.
That’s exactly how I felt reading The Tide Don’t Break and The Rising Tide Rests by Kennedy Layne.
These are the kinds of stories that feel soft but powerful at the same time — the kind that quietly pull you in and then stay with you long after you’ve turned the last page.
The Tide Don’t Break – Some Loves Never Wash Away
The Tide Don’t Break introduces us to Ali Presley and Dylan “Mac” McKenzie — first loves who were never really finished with each other, even if time tried to convince them otherwise.
Ali thought she left Magnolia Bluff (and Dylan) behind for good. Ten years later, she’s built a life that looks stable on the outside — career, friends, structure — but underneath it all are the walls she’s carefully built to avoid facing the past.
Dylan, on the other hand, has spent a decade chasing success under stadium lights, but no amount of achievement has ever filled the space Ali left behind. She was his safe place… until she walked away without explanation.
When they reunite at their alma mater’s gala, everything shifts. One glance across a crowded room and suddenly the past isn’t so far away anymore.
What I loved most about this book — beyond the story itself — is that it genuinely brought me back to reading. After being in a year-and-a-half reading rut, this was the book that broke it for me. It reminded me why I love getting lost in a story, why I love staying up “just one more chapter,” and why books can feel like such an escape.
And I think that made this story hit even harder.
The way it handles second chances isn’t rushed or overly perfect — it feels real. Ali never stopped loving him, but love alone wasn’t enough back then, and that fear still lingers now.
It’s emotional, a little aching, and exactly the kind of story that lingers like a summer night by the ocean.
The Rising Tide Rests – When Rivalry Turns Into Something More
If The Tide Don’t Break is about first love and second chances, The Rising Tide Rests shifts into something sharper — ex-friends turned rivals, with just enough tension to keep you hooked the entire time.
Ashley Palmer is composed, brilliant, and completely in control — especially in the courtroom. And especially when Damon Scott is on the opposing side.
Once close friends in law school, they’re now on opposite ends of their careers, constantly crossing paths in ways that are anything but neutral.
After Ashley wins a major case at Magnolia Bluff University, Damon offers her something unexpected: a position in his office.
Working together is the last thing she should want… but also the one thing she can’t seem to walk away from.
And this is where the story really shines — the slow burn. The tension. The way late nights turn into something more, and the line between rivalry and something deeper starts to blur.
It’s intense, it’s layered, and the chemistry is very much there.
The Vibe (Because It Matters)
If I had to describe this series as a whole, it’s:
- Emotional but grounded
- Soft, coastal energy with depth
- Second chances, slow burns, and meaningful connections
- The kind of books you want to read curled up in bed
It’s very much giving cozy but impactful — the kind of storytelling that feels just as much as it reads.
A Little About the Author

One of my favorite things about discovering new books is learning about the person behind them – and in this case, that experience became even more special than I expected.
Somewhere along the way, I became very good friends with Kennedy Layne, and truly, I can’t picture my life without her now. Getting to know the heart behind these stories has made reading them feel even more meaningful.
Kennedy Layne is a writer with a heart full of stories and dreams of sharing them with the world.
She’s a proud dog mom to the cutest Maltese on the planet, Prince Charming (Char, for short).
Deeply rooted in her community, Kennedy is active in several civic organizations and volunteers as a librarian at her church library. She lives in south Georgia with her younger sister, just down the road from her parents and her childhood home.
Kennedy is always planning her next adventure, whether it’s a beach getaway or a magical escape to Walt Disney World — which I obviously love.
She’s also a proud Swiftie who believes there’s a Taylor lyric for every occasion, that iced tea with Splenda (because, you know…diabetes) can cure anything, and that there will never be a better show than The Vampire Diaries. She cheers loudest for the Atlanta Braves and her beloved Georgia Southern Eagles – Hail Southern!
Final Thoughts
Reading The Tide Don’t Break and The Rising Tide Rests felt like slowing down in the best way.
They’re not just stories you read quickly and move on from — they’re the kind you carry with you a little bit.
If you love emotional second-chance romances, slow-burn tension, and stories that feel like they belong by the ocean, this series is absolutely worth picking up.
And honestly? I’m already thinking about them again… which is always how you know a book really got you.
I posted more on my TikTok and Instagram about them, so go make sure you check those videos out!
